About Craft

Sabai grass craft of Odisha is a traditional craft form in which artisans use sabai grass to weave baskets, mats, baskets and other items. The craft is popular in rural areas of Odisha and is known for its durability and aesthetic appeal.

Sabai is found in abundance in the forest fringe areas of Mayurbhanja district in Orisha. The local people are dependent on the surrounding forests for their livelihood.

The tribal people called it as “Bobei Dauda or Bobei Ghasa” locally. The scientific name of sabai grass is ‘Eulaliopsis Binata’, which consists of long leaf fibers. The fiber length of sabai grass is more than that of bamboo but fibre diameter is lower than bamboo.

The collection of a variety of leaves and grasses has been their main source of income over the period. Traditionally, ropes were the only product made by sabai grass.

The craftsmen have a practice of dyeing the Sabai strands with natural and vegetable dyes. The process involves cutting the strands, making appropriate bunches, mixing colours in proportion and adding to boiling water, soaking the strands in the boiling water with the dye and then drying them in the sun.

Today a variety of home goods are produced by sabai grass, helping the villagers improve their livelihood and empowering the women artisans.
