About Craft

Blue Pottery is widely recognized as a traditional craft of Jaipur. The name 'Blue Pottery' comes from the eye-catching blue dye used to color the pottery. The Persian Art of blue pottery came to Jaipur from Persia and Afghanistan via Mughal Courts. It was conferred with the Geographical Index status (GI) in 2008.

Jaipur Blue Pottery is one of the few pottery techniques in the world that does not use clay. The dough to form the pottery is made by mixing 6 ingredients, quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Katira Gond powder, Multani Mitti, and Saaji, and water. They are ground together and kneaded to make a dough. This is then moulded like a flatbread, sun dried, and finished with intricate motifs done with oxide pigments, as an underglaze. The glaze is applied as the last step before firing at around 800 degrees.

The craft became popular and became the special art of Jaipur from the early 19th-century era under the reign of Sawai Ram Singh.

Blue pottery today has become the common livelihood of the local artisans of Jaipur.
